2、閱讀中遇到生詞，怎么讀：初學者尤其是小學生，先以聽、做、說為主，單詞的書面形式不是主要內容，甚至可以暫時不要求記住。
1、錯覺之一，學生認為“我會國際音標，因此我的發音必然準確”，從而放松對自己尋音的重視。實際上，“會國際音標”而發音不準的人多得很。有些人認為某某人的發音準是國際音標的功勞;其實，即使學了國際音標，如果聽到的發音不準，學生發音也不可能準。關鍵是耳朵聽到的音要準，而不是眼睛所看見的符號。
2、錯覺之二，學生認為英語單詞用字母拼寫是毫無規律的，只有音標才能表示單詞的讀音，因此每記一個單詞，要記住其兩個書面形式：一個是字母的，另一個是音標的;這就必然增加記單詞的難度。同時，學生容易把字母和音標混淆，見到生詞，如果后面無音標，容易讀錯，例如把mail讀成mile，即把字母“ai”讀成音標/ai/。
1、以聽、做、說帶路，學單詞的拼寫形式時采用“讀音規則加輔助手段”的辦法;應該逐漸培養學生見生詞能讀出音的.能力;并不是說要學生背規則條條，而是引導學生從所學的單詞中自然歸納出規律。個別單詞讀音有特殊之處就用輔助手段注音(即，在字母上方直接注符號或在單詞后面括弧內重拼)，不特殊的就不必注音。英語拼寫和讀音之間的關系，盡管存在少量的特殊情況，但總的說是有規律的，掌握這些規律對記單詞很有幫助。規律是客觀存在的，不會因為人不認識它、不利用它而消失。學英語，要記幾千、甚至一兩萬個單詞，學生應該學會把單詞的意思、讀音、拼寫三方面結合起來記，而不要總是把音標插在中間起干擾作用。
2、編一本小學生、初中生用的學生詞典，有兩三千單詞就夠了，用上述“讀音規則加輔助手段”的辦法來表示讀音。(按新的《課程標準》初中畢業生只要求掌握1200單詞)。到了高中，為了查大詞典，再學國際音標也不晚，到那時基本讀音規律已經掌握好了。
